According to journalist Jordan Cronin, Newcastle United could still look to sign Everton star Dominic Calvert-Lewin this summer despite the potential reluctance from the Toffees to sell another key asset.

Newcastle are looking to bolster their striking options this summer and have been linked with the likes of Hugo Ekitike, Armando Broja and Calvert-Lewin, but have ultimately failed to get a deal for any strikers done so far.

However, while a deal for these players is not close to being completed, Cronin believes Newcastle could make a move for Calvert-Lewin as he is still on the club’s ‘agenda’ – but the Toon would need to the asking fee to be lowered.

He said on the Loaded Mag NUFC YouTube channel: “He’s still a player that’s on the agenda and a player that’s under consideration. A lot’s been made about his price tag now, and I think Everton are in dangerous territory in terms of offloading other players. They’ve already offloaded a key player in Richarlison, obviously, to Tottenham.

“In terms of the Calvert-Lewin interest, it’s still there, but as I say, the transfer fee which has been quoted is just a deal that Newcastle won’t do.

“It would have to be one that Everton would negotiate and bring the figure down, which I think looks unlikely at the minute.”

TIF Thoughts on Cronin’s comments…

Bringing in a player like Calvert-Lewin – hailed “exceptional” by Pete Graves – could improve Newcastle’s options up front next season, but as Cronin mentions, they want the price of the deal to come down as they were previously quoted a whopping £60m fee for the England international.

While Calvert-Lewin is a proven Premier League striker – impressing in the 2020/21 season with 21 goals and five assists – he took a huge step back last season due to injuries and only managed to score five goals in 18 appearances.

Paying that sort of price for a player who can score over 20 goals in all competitions may seem like a reasonable deal, but when you look at his recent injury history, signing Calvert-Lewin becomes a huge risk. The Magpies should still keep tabs on the player, however, as Everton may lower their asking price later in the window if they want to bring someone new in or help balance their books.
