Pete O’Rourke has claimed that Newcastle United could compete for the signature of forward Alexander Isak this summer.

Newcastle’s need for a striker is no secret. Current forward Callum Wilson is talented enough, but, the fact is, his injury record isn’t good enough to remain a reliable and consistently available option at St James’ Park.

Interestingly, the attacker has been linked with a move to St James’ Park after struggles with Hugo Ekitike.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Pete O’Rourke claimed that the Magpies could compete for former Arsenal target, Isak, this summer, saying: “He’s a good player for Sociedad, and for Sweden on the international stage as well. So, I think it would take big money to sign him this summer.

“So, it just shows where Newcastle are right now that they are looking at these top young players all across the world, and they do have the finances to try and compete with their rivals for their signatures.”

The Sweden forward could certainly do with a fresh start. His time at Sociedad seems to have stagnated significantly, and he enters next season off the back of a difficult campaign last time out, in which he scored just 10 goals in all competitions.

Isak’s underwhelming season came as somewhat of a surprise, given the fact that he managed 17 goals in the previous campaign. As a young player, the natural thing to happen is for such a rise to continue. But that wasn’t the case for the 22-year-old last season, who may just need a fresh start.

TIF Thoughts on Pete O’Rourke’s Comments…

We agree with O’Rourke when he says that Newcastle have the finances to compete for a certain calibre of players now. But, with that money, comes the responsibility of getting it right in the transfer market. So far, it must be said, they’ve spent well since the takeover.

Dan Burn, Matt Target, Chris Wood, Kieran Trippier, and Bruno Guimarães all arrived in January, before helping Newcastle to survival. So far this summer, meanwhile, both Nick Pope and Sven Botman have arrived.
