According to journalist Jordan Cronin, Newcastle United’s chances of signing Everton youngster Anthony Gordon this summer are slim after his breakthrough season, but could if the club is forced to sell.

Anthony Gordon enjoyed a breakout campaign last season for the Toffees during their difficult mission to retain their Premier League status and as a result, he has garnered interest from league rivals like Newcastle and Tottenham Hotspur.

However, despite the interest, Cronin believes Newcastle will find it difficult to sign the 21-year-old as he experienced a great season at his favourite club but this could happen if Everton is forced to sell through their financial problems.

He said on the Loaded Mag NUFC YouTube channel: “I don’t think Anthony Gordon would want to join Newcastle, personally.

“He’s just enjoyed his breakthrough season; let’s not forget Everton’s his boyhood club as well, which I think carries a lot of weight.

“If Everton turn around and go to him, ‘you’ve got to leave, financially we need the money’, or ‘Newcastle is going to pay £35m, you’ve got to go’, then maybe.

“I didn’t see it coming, I like the player, but his chances of coming to Newcastle are probably slim at this stage.”

TIF Thoughts on Cronin’s comments…

While Anthony Gordon has shown himself to be a hot young talent in the Premier League, tempting him out of his boyhood club is going to be a tall task for any team, even with Everton’s poor season behind them.

Last season he managed to bag four goals and three assists in all competitions while averaging 1.3 shots, 1.1 key passes, 1.1 dribbles, and 1.5 tackles with 74.5% passing accuracy. The young Englishman also showed his defensive qualities by ranking in the 99th percentile for blocks, the 96th for tackles, and the 94th for pressures per game compared to other wingers across the top five leagues (FBRef).

Despite the potential obstacles in landing Gordon, as Cronin points out there could be a possibility of bringing him in if Everton is forced to sell some of their prized assets as they have already done in the £60m sale of Richarlison to Spurs. In this case, Gordon could be a great addition to the Newcastle project alongside the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier, and Sven Botman.
