BT Sport pundit Rio Ferdinand has claimed that he does not think that Manchester United will sign Frenkie de Jong this summer.

There have been reports stating that Manchester United were close to agreeing on a deal with Frenkie de Jong over a move to the Premier League, but rivals Chelsea have recently joined the race to sign the Dutch midfielder as the deal to United has been put on hold.

United have made just one signing this summer, and that was Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord, someone who Erik ten Hag would have met last season when Ajax face them in the Eredivisie. But with De Jong being on the radar of United since it was announced that Ten Hag would take the helm, it is apparent that he is the number one target.

Despite Manchester United being interested in De Jong, Ferdinand spoke on the Rio Ferdinand Presents Five YouTube channel and claimed that he does not think his old club are willing to pay the money for the Dutch midfielder this summer.

“Unless Man United up their bid to around the £75-80 million mark, I don’t think it’s going to happen, and I don’t think they are willing to pay that. They are asking for big money, Barcelona,” Ferdinand said.

TIF Thoughts on Ferdinand’s comments…

United are in desperate need of some new players this summer, after last season they finished sixth place in the Premier League, and almost missed out on a place in the Europa League next term, which would have been disastrous for Ten Hag.

The Dutch manager knows De Jong from their time at Ajax together, so the fact that United have been so persistent on signing him shows how highly he is rated. And with Ten Hag only currently bringing one player in the door, this signing would put a lot of the United faithful at ease.
