Phil Hay believes that Leeds United have discussed potentially signing a new goalkeeper.
Under former manager Marcelo Bielsa, Leeds’ two first-team ‘keepers were Illan Meslier and Kristoffer Klaesson, who have a combined age of just 43 – which shows there is a very youthful mindset and not a load of experience within that department.
While their ages don’t represent a lot of experience, Meslier has already racked up 118 first-team appearances during his career, but having an older figurehead within the squad could help the current No 1 when he goes through tough moments.
Hay, who was recently speaking on The Phil Hay Show, believes that people within Leeds have discussed signing a new backup goalkeeper.
Do Leeds need a new keeper?
Yes!
No!
He said: “They have been talking about a second-choice goalkeeper; a new second-choice goalkeeper. Although, I’m not aware of any movement on that front.”
TIF Thoughts on Leeds looking for a new backup…
Last season was a tough but potentially big season for Meslier, as he made some errors – including a very costly one against Newcastle United – which may well have been a turning point for the worse in Leeds’ season as they then didn’t win another game in seven attempts.
So, when he does go through tougher moments during his time at Elland Road, it may well be wise to have someone who’s happy to sit on the bench for the majority of games and there to help the Frenchman develop both on and off the pitch.
Therefore, the seventh signing to walk through the door at Leeds may well be a more seasoned pair of hands between the sticks.
