Journalist Conor McGilligan  has claimed that Leeds United may have used Cody Gakpo as a decoy to sign Luis Sinisterra.

As things stand, it looks as though the Colombian winger is about to join the Whites, with Fabrizio Romano saying the transfer is a here we go.

However, it had been reported that another Eredivisie – in the form of Gakpo – was on the club’s radar too. In light of the latest Sinisterra update, though, McGilligan has suggested that the interest in the PSV Eindhoven man may have simply been a red herring to distract journalists and allow Leeds a better shot of signing Sinisterra.

Indeed, while speaking on the One Leeds Fan Channel, McGilligan said (17:31): “A really nice bit of business [ in signing Sinisterra]. Leeds have clearly been, you know, not doing it where it’s leaked here there and everywhere.

“And Cody Gakpo could have been a little detour. Leeds could have slipped in to the journalists, or whatever over there: ‘Cody Gakpo, that who we are in for’.

“And then under the radar, you’re not looking at PSV Eindhoven’s star boy, you’re looking at Feyernood’s star boys.”

TIF thoughts on Cody Gakpo, Luis Sinisterra and Leeds…

The idea of signing Gakpo certainly had some Leeds supporters excited, with McGilligan saying he couldn’t believe Leeds were in for the player, calling it a ‘really exciting’ deal.

In the end, it does seem as if that was too good to be true, but it clearly isn’t all bad for the Whites. Indeed, if that Sinisterra deal does get over the line, the Premier League outfit would have landed a pretty top talent.

The 23-year-old has plenty to offer in terms of attacking output, having netted 23 goals and claimed 14 assists in all competitions.  last term.

If Gakpo was truly a decoy, it looks as though the Leeds hierarchy may have played a bit of a blinder here.
