Graham Smyth has dropped an interesting claim during a Q&A about Leeds United transfer target Cody Gakpo.

Leeds reportedly hold an interest in the Dutch winger, which could be largely down to the fact that Raphinha is still likely to depart at some point, while the future of fellow winger Jack Harrison is also very much up in the air.

However, if Leeds want to land Gakpo this summer, they will likely need at least one of Raphinha or Harrison to leave given the Dutchman’s hefty price tag of £35m, which would take their summer spending way past the £50m mark already.

Smyth has claimed that while talks aren’t currently ongoing with Gakpo, the winger can’t be ruled out as a potential signing this summer.

Will Leeds manage to sign Gakpo?

No!

He said: “Sounds ideal, doesn’t he? He’s a player YEP writer Joe Donnohue gets very excited about and you can see why Leeds would be interested. He’s also very expensive, perhaps prohibitively so, given there are three positions in which Leeds want to recruit.

“Unlike Mohamed Camara, Tyler Adams or Charles De Ketelaere, he is not one the club have confirmed they’re in talks with, but that doesn’t mean you can rule it out completely. If it happened, it would be a serious coup.”

TIF Thoughts on interest in Gakpo…

As things stand, bringing in another winger would not likely be high on the agenda for Leeds given they have Raphinha and Harrison who are both very reliable and Premier League-proven, but if one was to depart, things may begin to accelerate on Gakpo.

This was a low point in Leeds United's history, but how many points did they get in the 2003/04 campaign?

As Smyth claimed, it would be a serious coup for Leeds and Jesse Marsch if Gakpo was to end up at Elland Road given he’s also being linked with clubs such as Arsenal and Liverpool, and it’s no wonder considering how impressive he was last season for PSV, finishing the campaign with 36 goal involvements.
