Journalist Jonny McFarlane has admitted on the Rangers Review YouTube Channel that he has concerns over the club’s re-signing of Allan McGregor.

McFarlane has previously gone on record to say that he felt it was time for the veteran goalkeeper to call it a day after a memorable European run and Scottish Cup triumph.

However, the 40-year-old has since put pen to paper on a one-year contract extension and will be seemingly holding onto the No 1 spot, although Jon McLaughlin may have something to say about that.

Nonetheless, after 203 clean sheets for the Glasgow giants, it appears that McGregor still has unfinished business – but McFarlane isn’t convinced and thinks teams may expose his weaknesses.

Can you see McGregor being a number two next season?

He said: “I worry about teams targeting Allan McGregor’s lack of tendency to come and collect the ball when it’s thrown into the box.

“I also think that Rangers, to evolve, need to get a more of a sweeper-keeper to keep in touch with a lot of the clubs around Europe who are utilising the ‘keeper in a more offensive capacity.”

With manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst thought to be influential in the deal, it would seem that the goalkeeper certainly has the full backing of his boss.

Charlie Nicholas called for the shot-stooper to hang up his gloves at the end of the 55-winning season and blamed the man between the sticks for his part in the Light Blues losing their grip on the title last year.

However, former Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes labelled his critics ‘numpties’ and praised the former Scotland international for an “outstanding” save as he kept out a Red Star Belgrade penalty in their crucial Europa League last-16 clash last season.

While this decision will undoubtedly split opinion, it does remain to be seen whether McGregor is still seen as the first-choice at Ibrox.

As long as Rangers have Connor Goldson in that back line , NO ONE in their right mind would advocate using a ” sweeper Keeper ” . Its down to debate if Rangers should have given AMcG a new deal ….personally i think it was the correct thing to do although i would not neccessarily give him as many games . A McG may be a lot of things , but our weak link he is not .
