According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, Scottish giants Rangers are willing to listen to offers for defender Borna Barisic this summer if a ‘suitable’ one comes in.

Despite the Croatian having been a critical figure for the Gers over the last few seasons – helping the Glasgow outfit to their first Scottish Premier League title in 10 years – it has been revealed that manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst is willing to let go of the defender if the right offer comes in.

O’Rourke claimed that this is a move that has been talked about over the last few summers and could be expected that the 29-year-old, rated at £5.4 million, would garner interest from the most significant leagues in the world, but it will come down to the fee offered.

He told GiveMeSport, “Well, this move has been talked about in probably every transfer window for the last couple of years.

“We’ve all expected Barisic possibly to move on, there’s been talks of moves to the Premier League and moves to other European leagues as well, but he has remained at Rangers.

“It’ll come down to fees, if somebody makes a suitable offer for Barisic, I’m sure Rangers would consider it.”

TIF thoughts on O’Rourke’s comments…

Rangers will be looking to continue their rebuild under Van Bronckhorst this summer and so if they can bulk up their transfer budget by selling Barisic for a big price, then they should look to do so. While O’Rourke tipped the Dutchman to ask for an increased transfer budget this summer, in order to compete with rivals Celtic, they will need to acquire as much money as possible to add new faces.

Last season, Barisic impressed at the Ibrox, averaging 1.9 tackles, one interception, 1.9 clearances, 1.3 key passes, 1.8 crosses, and 1.6 long balls with 83.4% passing accuracy on 40.8 attempts per game. (Whoscored)

While losing a player of Barisic quality could hurt the club in the short term, picking up a good transfer fee for him at the age of 29 could be the last time they are able to cash in on the defender, so it makes sense for Rangers to consider offers this summer.
