It has been claimed that Manchester United are likely to bid for Ruben Neves if they fail to land Frenkie De Jong from Barcelona.
The Portuguese international has made it clear to his current employers (Sport via Sport Witness) that he intends to leave Molineux before the start of the new campaign, with the West Midlanders thought to be seeking around €60m (£51.4m) for the 25-year-old.
United may well take them up on their offer should their attempts to land De Jong fall short.
Fabrizio Romano has suggested that another bid for the Dutchman from the Red Devils is forthcoming, having seen an opening bid of €60m plus €10m in add-ons (£60m) turned down with Barcelona holding out for around €85m (£72.9m).
Who would you prefer at United?
He said: “Manchester United still pushing hard for Frenkie de Jong, the Barcelona midfielder. They’ve had a couple of initial bids rejected, but they’re still trying to get him over the line. If they can’t get him over the line, it looks like they’ll turn to Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves.”
TIF Thoughts on Neves to United…
While Neves may not be the extravagant name that De Jong upholds, he could still be a very good signing for United.
Hailed as “excellent” by Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, he boasts an 84% pass success rate in the Premier League from last season, while his average of six long balls per game is at least two more than any current United player (WhoScored).
He has become a seasoned performer in the top flight of English football, whereas De Jong would have to adapt, and after topping the average SofaScore match ratings for the second successive season at his current club, Neves could well bring his influential presence to Manchester and become the metronome of that uninspiring midfield.
