Leeds United could make a move this summer for their previous January transfer target Darren Randolph in order to help current starting goalkeeper Illan Meslier next summer, according to journalist Conor McGilligan.

The Yorkshire outfit needs to bolster their goalkeeping options this summer as aside from starting keeper Meslier, they only have Kristoffer Klaesson in the squad, who has only managed one appearance for the club since he arrived in 2021.

While there have not been many rumours around a potential backup coming in, McGilligan believes the club should look at former January target Randolph as he could help Meslier and finds it bizarre the club didn’t move for him previously.

He said on One Leeds Fan Channel, “Darren Randolph, who apparently according to Phil Hay, Leeds United looked at in January but didn’t decide to do it. Once again absolutely bizarre why they didn’t do that, I feel it could have been a little bit easier for Meslier in the run-in”. (11:27)

TIF Thoughts on Randolph to Leeds…

Leeds desperately need to bolster their options between the sticks as any sort of injury or illness to Meslier would mean they would need to turn to an unproven, and inexperienced option in Klaesson, whereas Randolph would a least give them a Premier League proven backup option.

While Randolph did not feature for West Ham United last season after they signed Alphonse Areola, he has 34 Premier League appearances as well as 199 Championship appearances and therefore has enough experience to back up Meslier and give the squad some more depth.

It is unsure how much he will cost the Whites, but considering his contract runs out in 2023 and he is currently 35 years old, they should be able to get him for next to nothing which allows them to spend money elsewhere in the squad while getting some much-needed experience.
