Speaking to This is Futbol, journalist Pete O’Rourke has revealed his thoughts on the recent links involving Mauro Icardi and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The Paris Saint-Germain striker hasn’t enjoyed the best of times in France, making just 24 appearances in Ligue 1 last season. As the World Cup approaches in December, he’ll be desperate to receive consistent game-time.
The fact is, however, with Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe to compete with at PSG, Icardi will not receive the needed minutes in France’s capital. Instead, a move elsewhere may be on the cards. Or even, a move to Wolves, who O’Rourke told This Is Futbol should target the forward, saying:
“Yeah, it’d be a big gamble. I think for Wolves if they were to sign Icardi, but again, he’s obviously had his issues at PSG, it’s not really worked out from that move. But on his day, as he proved at Inter Milan, he’s a prolific goalscorer. And it is something that Wolves are looking to improve, they are looking to add more goals to the side as well.
“So, if they were to move for Icardi and get his head right, and get him focused on football, it could prove to be a really astute piece of business because he is a prolific goalscorer and Argentina international as well.”
Signing Icardi would be a statement signing from Wolves. He offers the European pedigree that they lack; a player that has played at the very top. His experience, alone, could offer a major boost to those at the club, let alone his goalscoring prowess.

Interestingly, Wolves are already eyeing a potential ‘statement’ signing in the form of Matheus Nunes.
We agree with O’Rourke when he says it would be a risk to sign Icardi. There’s no guarantees that any deal would work out, especially for a player who failed to impress when at a top club like PSG.
Yet, it is worth looking back on his time at Inter Milan. Some people seem to forget that this is a player, who scored 124 goals in 219 appearance whilst in Italy. Still only 29, too, Icardi’s next suitors would still have a few years left to utilise the forward and, perhaps, help him return to his best.
