Journalist Joey D’Urso has slammed Rangers for their involvement with digital currency firm Sportemon Go amid the company’s recent struggles.

A recent article in The Athletic explained that the NFT and cryptocurrency firm – which had had sponsorship deals with the likes of Rangers and Hibernian – has now ceased trading tokens after their value crashed.

The writer explained that the Gers had s announced a two-year deal with the company last October only for the Sportemon Go digital token (SGOX) to ‘nosedive’ in value.

In a Tweet, D’Urso named a couple of current footballers as well as the Scottish club in his criticism, as he wrote: “Crypto firm Sportemon Go looked like obvious nonsense when Andy Robertson, Luke Shaw, Rangers FC and others promoted it to millions of football fans, and surely enough, it has imploded.”

The relationship between cryptocurrency firms and football seems to be something that is being explored more every day, but faces plenty of criticism.
Indeed, Liverpool’s Fenway Sports Group were recently challenged amid reports that they could make a cryptocurrency their new shirt sponsor.
It certainly seems as though Rangers have had their hands stung by this latest involvement with Sportemon Go – who’s logo has appeared on the club shirt since last October – with the brand facing such public humiliation.
With D’Urso clearly making his opinions known on the idea of football club getting involved with this ‘obvious nonsense’, perhaps the Scottish club will learn from their mistake.
