Journalist Grace Robertson has criticised Fenway Sports Group amid talk of who could become Liverpool’s new shirt sponsor.

According to a recent report in The Athletic, the Reds are in talks regarding a new shirt sponsorship deal as their £40 million-a-year contract with Standard Chartered will expire in May 2023.

In a fresh update, David Ornstein has now claimed that reported companies from the cryptocurrency sector are among those who could end up taking over from the current sponsors.

Reacting to the news on Twitter, Robertson wrote: “I see FSG are up to their usual “put out the most extreme suggestion possible then later backtrack a bit and make it look like they really care about what the fans think” move.”

TIF thoughts on FSG and Liverpool…
The Athletic article explains that the cryptocurrency sector has faced scrutiny in the past due to the toll it takes on the environment to operate. As the market is also unregulated there are also doubts regarding the financial risks associated with the sponsorship.
Liverpool also recently launched their own non-fungible tokens (NFTs), which led to some backlash from a number of groups. With that in mind, it’s easy to see why Robertson seems so critical of the latest move by FSG.
