Pundit Michael Stewart has revealed that he was ‘surprised’ to hear that Rangers striker Kemar Roofe has scored 15 goals in all competitions this season.

Against St Mirren over the past weekend, the forward netted a hat-trick as his side cruised to a 4-0 win away from home.

After his eye-catching display, it was no surprise to hear Stewart discussing Roofe with fellow pundit Steven Thompson on BBC Scotland’s Sportscene.

Indeed, while speaking about the Rangers star, Thompson said (as quoted by Ibrox News): “It’s [15] goals, it’s a pretty good return.”

Stewart then claimed that when he was told of Roofe’s goal tally, it had come as a bit of a shock to him. He said: “When you told me that stat earlier on, I’ve got to be honest, I was surprised.”

He later added:  “Yes, I know [it’s across all competitions]. But even still, there’s that perception it’s not been a great season for Kemar Roofe and it probably hasn’t.

“But, still. [15] goals is not bad.”

TIF Thoughts on Kemar Roofe and Rangers…

It’s fair to say that with 15 goals in 33 games this season, Roofe has been a fairly reliable goalscorer for the Gers this term. When you add in the fact that he doesn’t start every game – 12 of his 21 league appearances this term have been from the bench – his record is all the more impressive.

How well do you remember where Rangers' signings came in from down the years? Take our quiz to find out! First up, Carlos Pena was the Gers' most expensive arrival during the summer of 2017, but where did he join from?

Indeed, Roofe is the club’s second-highest goalscorer, but with 1,628 minutes of game time to his name, he has played far less frequently than the likes of Alfredo Morelos and James Tavernier, who rival him for the accolade of becoming the club’s top scorer this season.

With the striker being in and out of the team, it’s easy to understand why Stewart was left a little dumbfounded by this latest statistic.
