Rangers have opted to back out of their trip to take part in the Sydney Cup, raising eyebrows amongst journalists.

BBC Sport’s Tam Cowan couldn’t believe the decision from the Gers, labelling it ‘bonkers’ when talking to PLZ Soccer. He was adamant that they should have sent a second-string side over, not risking any first-team players to reap the financial rewards.

Can Rangers win the Europa League?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

The friendly tournament was set to see the first-ever Old Firm clash take place outside of Scotland, but that will have to wait now, leaving Cowan baffled.

Talking to PLZ Soccer, he had the following to say: “I’m caught between the devil and the deep blue sea with this. I think it’s bonkers that they cannot. I mean, even in terms of the insurance and stuff like that, they couldn’t possibly have contemplated sending their first-team players across there.

“To turn their noses up at that sort of dosh for the reasons apparently given, I do think it’s bonkers.”

TIF Thoughts on Cowan’s comments…

You can clearly see why Cowan is surprised with the decision. It would have helped the club make some easy money in ticket sales while helping to grow the Rangers brand across the world.

Who followed James Tavernier to Rangers from Wigan Athletic in the same season?

Taking part in such a high-profile game on the other side of the world will have got plenty of media attention in Australia, hopefully making new Rangers fans along the way.

However, it rewards the loyal fans in Scotland who travelled up and down the country following the team at their lowest moments, keeping them going after their heartbreaking administration and liquidation.
