Pundit and former Rangers midfielder Barry Ferguson has claimed that Allan McGregor is the best goalkeeper in the league – but feels he will hang up his boots at the end of the season.

McGregor came through the Rangers youth academy and re-joined the club from Hull City in 2018, but his contract is set to expire at the end of this season. In the Scottish Premiership this season, he has made 26 appearances whilst conceding just 22 goals, keeping 12 clean sheets.

Although McGregor has been a mainstay in the Gers side this season, he turned 40 earlier this year and his contract is up at the end of the campaign, so he may opt to retire rather than sign a new deal.

Despite the Scottish ‘keeper’s consistent performances this term, Ferguson spoke on Go Radio and said that he has a feeling that his former teammate may retire at the end of this season.

Ferguson said (via FootballScotland): “Believe me when I say this, because I’ve played with the guys that are in the Premier League and some top goalkeepers. I’m not just saying it because I know him; he [McGregor] is the best, without a doubt.

“He’s a big-game player and it will be interesting to see what he does in the summer. I’m unsure, I don’t know what he’ll do.

“I’ve got that feeling that he’s going to hang up his gloves.”

TIF Thoughts on Barry Ferguson’s comments…

McGregor has been a standout performer for Giovanni van Bronckhorst in the Rangers net this season, he has the second-lowest amount of goals conceded per game in the league with 0.8 and has the third-most clean sheets in the league (12), as per SofaScore.

It may be time for McGregor to hand over the reins to second-choice ‘keeper Joe McLaughlin, as the current Rangers No 1 is 40 years old and he may start to see his performance levels decrease if he continues next season.
