Pundit and former Celtic striker John Hartson has highlighted how important Callum McGregor has been for the club this season, showing his desire to lead.

Following Scott Brown’s departure from the club in the summer, vice-captain Callum McGregor was given the armband ahead of the 2021/22 campaign. He has been a key part of the side under Ange Postecoglou, featuring 27 times in the league, scoring two goals and chipping in with two assists.

McGregor has led Celtic to the top of the table, and with just six games to go, they are six points ahead of second-placed Rangers, so the Hoops are firmly in the driving seat for the title heading into the dying embers of the season.

With the new role that McGregor has taken on this season, Hartson highlighted on Go Radio how much of a leader he has been this campaign for Celtic.

He said: “He’s got character, the guy broke his cheekbone, within a week he was back with a face mask on – what does that tell you? He wants to play, he doesn’t want to miss games, he’s got the desire, he wants to lead.”

TIF Thoughts on John Hartson’s comments…

McGregor, who is valued at £6.75m (as per Transfermarkt), has been a consistent performer this season for Celtic. In the Scottish Premiership, he has an average passing accuracy of 90%, has a successful dribble rate of 57% and has been named in SofaScore’s Team of the Week six times.

Celtic have bounced back this season after last year’s failure to attain 10 Scottish titles in a row, and this could be down to the impressive leadership and form of their captain who has led by example with his impressive performances on the pitch. Now it is on him and his teammates to finish the job in the coming weeks.
