Pete O’Rourke believes that if Wolves can sign Matheus Nunes this summer, it would be a huge boost for manager Bruno Lage.

The Wolves manager was left slightly vulnerable after the January transfer window as the club’s owners decided against backing him despite putting Wolves in a great place to qualify for European competition, but they now find themselves even outside of a Europa Conference League place.

Will Wolves back Bruno Lage this summer?

Lage will be hoping that after proving he’s got the ability to make Wolves competitive, the club’s owners might loosen the purse strings this summer transfer window and bolster the squad, with Sporting’s Matheus Nunes seen as a possible midfield target according to The Athletic.

Transfer guru O’Rourke has been speaking to GiveMeSport about how providing Lage with Nunes would be massive for the manager. He said: “If Wolves can steal a march by using their Portuguese connections to try and get a deal done, that will be a huge boost to Bruno Lage and his plans for next summer.”

Which former Man United man almost joined Wolves?

Bringing in someone like Nunes, who has experience in the Portuguese top flight as well as the Europa League and Champions League, would be a major coup given the calibre of other clubs said to be interested in him, but the midfielder may become a necessity if Ruben Neves was to leave, with Arsenal said to have taken a liking towards the Portugal international.

If Wolves want to become serious and regular contenders for the European spots, backing Lage is the minimum requirement given the financial muscle at the top end of the Premier League table as well as others such as Aston Villa and Newcastle United, who are not going to be shy in splashing the cash this summer based on what they did in January.
