Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez has posted a picture on Instagram of himself and Ezri Konsa putting in extra work in the gym.

While the Steven Gerrard era got off to a superb start, with the former Rangers manager winning four of his first six games, since the honeymoon period ended, Gerrard and Villa have been struggling, and are currently on a run of four defeats in a row.

Have you been impressed by Gerrard?

This has seen Villa slip down into the bottom half of the Premier League and now sit just two points ahead of previously relegation-threatened Newcastle United and level with Brentford – which may be why some players have taken it upon themselves to put in work behind the scenes as they look to end the season strongly.

Martinez recently posted a picture of him and Konsa working out in the gym behind the scenes with no other teammates in sight on his Instagram account, accompanying the picture with a three-word message: ‘No days off.’

TIF Thoughts on Martinez and Konsa putting in extra work…

Konsa has started four out of the last nine games under Gerrard, pointing towards his place being far from nailed-on in the Villa side, so seeing him put in extra work away from regular training sessions will be a pleasant sight for the manager and the fans.

Villa and Martinez haven’t kept a clean sheet for over a month, shipping nine goals since then, so Martinez will acknowledge that he and his defence must work harder to give the team a better chance of winning by keeping the ball out of the net. Extra sessions with a defender will likely go a long way to improving their defensive record.
