Pete O’Rourke has delivered a damning update to Givemesport on the contract situation between Leeds United and Kalvin Phillips.

Leeds United are still yet to see how Kalvin Phillips can perform over the course of 90 minutes under Jesse Marsch and also after having surgery on his hamstring with the midfielder once again left on the bench, but they didn’t miss him too much picking up a comfortable 3-0 victory.

Phillips is reportedly willing to stay at Elland Road and sign a new deal, however, the club will have to match his level of ability and ambition if they are to keep their star midfielder, especially now that clubs such as Newcastle United and Aston Villa are said to hold an interest in him.

O’Rourke has been speaking to Givemesport and delivered some worrying news Leeds fans won’t want to hear, he said:

“When you’ve got the money at your disposal, like Newcastle do have, they can try and attract players to the club with lucrative contracts.

I don’t think Leeds could get anywhere near what Newcastle could offer Kalvin Phillips. There is ongoing talks over a new deal for Kalvin Phillips at Elland Road but still nothing signed there as yet.”

This was a low point in Leeds United's history, but how many points did they get in the 2003/04 campaign?

TIF Thoughts on Phillips contract situation…

It would be an almighty blow for Leeds to lose someone of Phillips’ ability as it’s clear to see how much he means to the team given their great season last time out when Phillips hardly missed any games, compared to this campaign where they have ended up fighting against relegation when Phillips has missed the majority of games.

For a club such as Leeds to hear that they will not be able to compete with a fellow relegation rival in the form of Newcastle United will be a major blow and surely disheartening, but fans will hope that Phillips’ emotional attachment to the club having come through their academy will be enough to see him commit his future to the Whites.
