Newcastle United supporters will be left furious after Sky Sports footage emerged on Sunday of a penalty shout against Jacob Murphy which was not given.

The Toon came close to taking a point from Stamford Bridge on the weekend but a late goal saw the points stolen late on by the hosts.

Should VAR be scrapped?

However, the attention was put firmly on the referee, David Coote, after the game after Eddie Howe’s men saw a number of decisions go against them.

And the biggest incident of all was Trevoh Chalobah’s coming together with Murphy inside the box which saw the Chelsea man pulling away at the Toon star’s shirt inside the box.

Not only did the Chelsea man almost pull Murphy’s shirt off the Newcastle forward, but he failed to get any of the ball and he lunged with his left foot to which Coote awarded Howe’s side with a corner.

This penalty shout also came after Newcastle felt Kai Havertz should have been shown a red card for his elbow on Dan Burn which left the defender with a cut to his face.

TIF Thoughts on the footage…

We are still amazed Chelsea got away with this as it seemed a certain penalty given there was potentially two fouls from Chalobah worthy of conceding a penalty.

And it is situations like this which, for us, will cast doubts over the use of VAR in the Premier League as this seemed to be a clear and obvious error from the referee.

The Toon have been on a fantastic run and have put themselves in a great position to maintain their Premier League status this season.

Although they will feel aggrieved coming out of the game against Chelsea, they should certainly take encouragement from their display as they pushed the world champions right to the very final minutes.
