Football pundit Peter Martin has said there is no reason why Rangers can’t get into the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

Their opponents in the next round of the competition are Red Star Belgrade, who they will face in Scotland tonight.

In the last stage of the competition, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men recorded a famous 6-4 aggregate victory over German giants Borussia Dortmund, after winning away and then drawing the second leg at home.

While discussing the match on The PLZ Soccer Show, Martin suggested the club’s win over Dortmund proves they are ‘more than capable’ of winning the tie – and it wouldn’t come as an upset.

He explained his thoughts, saying: “It’s no longer a case of surprising anyone, Rangers are more than capable of getting past this section as well and going into the next round of the Europa League.

“They’ve done it all away into this section before. No reason why this one couldn’t be something special.”

TIF Thoughts on Rangers…

If the club could get into the next round of the Europa League, it certainly would be a ‘special’ achievement. Indeed, they haven’t reached the quarter-final stages of any tournament in Europe since the 2007/08 season when they went all the way to the UEFA Cup final.

Their opponents should be no pushovers, though. Indeed, they are the reigning Serbian domestic champions and have a famous history in Europe – having won the European Cup back in 1991.

Will Rangers make it into the next round of the Europa League?

Yes

No

No

Taking all that into account, this should be a pretty tough match. Evidently, however, Martin feels Rangers have enough about them to win the tie.
