Tottenham Hotspur’s inconsistency reared its ugly head once again as they fell to a disappointing defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday.

It was the Cristiano Ronaldo show under the lights at Old Trafford, with his hattrick finally downing Spurs in the closing stages after the visitors levelled the game twice. Despite having more of the play in the final third, it took a Harry Kane penalty and a Harry Maguire own goal to get Spurs back into the game.

Roy Keane delivered his verdict on Antonio Conte in Sky Sports’ coverage of the clash, saying this about the Italian: “When Spurs got to 2-2, they sat back and invited Man Utd to come and win the game. Ronaldo is going to get all the headlines, but Conte will be fuming with the goals they gave away and the chances they failed to take. When Spurs got comfortable, they lost concentration and intensity and were rightfully punished for it. As soon as you relax at this level, you get punished. That is what Tottenham did.”

It’s been widely reported for some time he is far from happy at the club, with his future in serious doubt, so to see him getting more and more frustrated with performances won’t be a good thing.

It’s evident to see why he’s unhappy though, it’s one step forwards two steps back for Spurs. at the moment. They can’t string together a run of good performances, they beat the champions in Man City, but then go and lose to relegation candidates Burnley.

Champions League qualification is firmly in the hands of their rivals now, and Spurs are going to need a near perfect end to the season to give themselves any chances of finishing in the top four.
