Football writer Craig Hope has claimed that he expects Newcastle United to make around six new signings in the summer.

During the winter transfer market, the Magpies made no less than five signings – though one of those, Matt Targett, was only a loan deal.

While such great overhaul could potentially disrupt a team, it has had the desired effect at Newcastle with the club now thriving in the Premier League, winning seven out of 10 games since the start of 2022.

In light of that successful formula, Hope has urged the club to repeat the trick, suggesting there is ‘real scope’ for five or six summer signings.

Speaking True Faith NUFC Podcast, he said (35:15): “I think six [signings] is a fair number. I think when you look at what they did in January with five in the end. I think six for this summer is a fair number.

“What you don’t want to see is, like I say, finishing the season really well and then saying, ‘You know what, let’s do two or three’.

“I think there is real scope for good new five or six there.”

TIF thoughts on Newcastle and their summer plans…

One of the first deals the club could make is to turn the loan move for Targett from Aston Villa into a permanent one. Amid talk of such possible plans, the left-back recently claimed he was simply ‘focusing here and now’ but that could change in the summer.

Elsewhere, Spanish media have also linked Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar with an improbable move to Tyneside due to his flailing relationship with fans if the French club.

Considering their activity in January, it does feel as if Newcastle are really only just getting started. No doubt they will be linked with a load of other exciting names as the summer progresses.

It will be interesting to see if they end up around that figure of six which Hope has touted.
