Newcastle United’s impressive unbeaten Premier League record in 2022 finally came to an end as Chelsea’s Kai Havertz popped up with a moment of brilliance in the dying stages to settle the tie 1-0.

The inspired Magpies performance may be overlooked by supporters after David Coote looked to steal the headlines. First of all, he didn’t send Havertz off in the first half, much to the shock of Jamie Redknapp. Then he didn’t give Newcastle what appeared to be a stonewall penalty in the second period with the scores level.

Will Newcastle qualify for Europe next season?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

After the game, Redknapp looked back at the incident and couldn’t believe the outcome, going on record with: “Diabolical. If you’re not sure, you’ve got the luxury of the VAR. How he can not see that… he’s getting pulled, he’s getting pulled, he’s getting pulled. Trevor Chalobah keeps going with his wrong foot, his left foot, digging and digging again. It’s a blatant penalty. If you cannot see that, you’ve got the VAR as well. David Coote needs to make better decisions.”

It was certainly a strange call to first of all not give it in the first place, but then to not give the penalty when you can look at VAR is even more surprising. There’s no way to know how the game would have gone if the penalty was given, but one thing for certain is the Newcastle players and supporters will feel hard done by.

Of course it would have been the German to pop up to win the game after avoiding that potential red card earlier on in the game. It seemed like it was all in all just one of those days for Newcastle who can take confidence from their performance and nine point cushion to the drop zone.
