Manchester United fans will surely be angry to see that Fred was seemingly fouled before they conceded last night.

The Red Devils were dumped out of the Champions League at Old Trafford by Atletico Madrid and despite having registered five shots on target they finished the game with an XG of just 0.7, which is shocking for a team playing at home and also one looking to progress in the Champions League.

Should Man United have got a free kick?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

While Manchester United are now out of Europe and have just the Premier League to focus on, they may feel quite unlucky as there appeared to be some fouls in the build-up to the goal they conceded, firstly on Anthony Elanga, which was picked up by the commentators on BT Sport, but the foul on Fred appeared to go unnoticed.

The Brazilian midfielder was seemingly barged into just moments before Atletico Madrid got into Man United’s penalty area and saw Renan Lodi head home.

Manchester United fans, do you remember how many points you picked up in seasons gone by? Let's find out, starting with 2020/21

TIF Thoughts on the potential foul…

This foul by Marcos Llorente was not picked up by either VAR or the BT Sport commentators, instead, they focussed on the soft contact which saw Elanga fall down at the other end of the pitch, but if Fred is not pushed to the ground then he’s likely going to be where Rodrigo De Paul passes the ball through to Joao Felix.

Of course, Man United fans will no doubt be furious with the decision as this goal ended up costing them the tie and their place in the Champions League. It’s small margins that can often define ties between clubs that are very similarly matched and last night the call went against the Red Devils.

This big decision could lead on to a number of things. One thing that’s already known is that this is now set to be Cristiano Ronaldo’s first season without a trophy in 16 years. Also, the club are now set to miss out on as much as  £9.1 million for not qualifying for the quarter finals in the competition (as per Mirror). This is money that could have helped the club given their £92.2 million financial net loss in the 12 months ending June 2021.

Of course, Man United may not have won even if the goal didn’t stand but the result certainly hasn’t helped Ralph Rangnick’s cause as he came in for some stick from Paul Scholes.
