Noted journalist Fabrizio Romano has been discussing Liverpool’s Divock Origi and his future after the summer transfer window.

Origi’s future at Anfield has been in doubt for some time now. A report over the summer from The Athletic claimed that the club were open to selling him “if a suitable offer is tabled”, however, that obviously never came to pass and he has been stuck at Anfield as a result, where he has made 14 appearances in all competitions – the vast majority of them being in cups.

The Belgian forward has firmly cemented his place in Liverpool folklore for his exploits over the past few years, particularly for his role in helping them win the Champions League in 2019 with goals in the semi-finals and final of the competition.

But speaking on a recent video on his YouTube channel, Romano appeared to hint that his time at the club was pretty much over and that Liverpool are prepared to let him go on a free transfer, before claiming that Italian giants Milan are already showing an interest in him.

He said: “The decision has been made on both sides, he wants to try a new challenge and Liverpool are prepared to let him go on a free, so no contract extension for Origi and AC Milan are leading the race to sign him as a free agent.

“The contract is not signed yet, but the verbal agreement is really close between Divock Origi and Milan. So they’re discussing about the final points, they will have another meeting to complete the agreement, to complete the negotiation, but Divock Origi will leave Liverpool.”

It does seem a shame that Origi’s Liverpool career is just going to peter out like this and that the club won’t be getting any money for him.

Whilst the reports last summer mentioned a ‘suitable offer’, you would imagine that they would have been better off taking any sort of proposal.

Because whilst he has contributed this season, with his most notable goal being a late winner against Wolves back in December, for the most part, his role in the campaign has been pretty minimal. Surely they would have been better off cashing in either last summer or in the winter and using that money to bring in someone that actually had a future at the club.

Now, barring any Barcelona-style performances from him in an emergency situation, Liverpool aren’t really set to get much more use out of him between now and the end of the season.
