Noted West Ham United insider ExWHUemployee has provided some details about the future of goalkeeper David Martin at the club.

To call Martin a ‘fringe player’ at the club would be something of an understatement as he’s only made five appearances for the club since he signed for them back in 2019, with all of those appearances coming in his debut campaign.

Since then he has been reduced to a backup, only occasionally making it onto the bench for some of their games. But despite his absence, clearly there are some at the club who want to keep him around as he signed a contract extension last summer, a contract that is set to expire at the end of this current season.

A staple of FIFA Ultimate Team in 2012, which Nigerian striker had a disastrous spell at the Hammers?

Speaking during a Q&A special of The West Ham Way podcast following a discussion with host Dave Walker about players that the club could be set to lose this summer, Ex claimed that the veteran shot-stopper appeared to be more than willing to stay at the club for a little bit longer, but that the club are yet to make a decision on whether or not they will keep him hanging around:

“He wants to stay for another year, he’s desperate to stay for another year. At the moment I don’t think they’ve made a decision on that.”

It certainly is an interesting decision that West Ham United have on their hands when it comes to Martin. The goalkeeping position is one the club do need to look at, because at the moment, the only man they will have to go between the sticks for them is fellow veteran Darren Randolph.

There have been suggestions that they are looking to bring in Seny Dieng (The West Ham Way podcast, via WestHamZone), from Championship side Queens Park Rangers this upcoming summer, but if they are successful with that, do they really need another veteran backup when someone like Randolph, who until recently was good enough to be the Republic of Ireland’s number one goalkeeper, is already there?

It comes across as a bit of a waste of money to have both of them on their books, so it should be one or the other, but with Randolph already on the books, it makes sense to let Martin go.
