Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz has revealed on Instagram the gruesome consequence of being fouled in his last outing.

The Brazilian could not help his team pick up any points over the weekend as they fell to defeat away at West Ham United in the Premier League. Indeed, goals from Andriy Yarmolenko and Pablo Fornals were enough to see the home side over the line, despite Jacob Ramsey pulling one back for the Villans.

During the match, however, Luiz was actually kicked in the face by West Ham midfielder Manuel Lanzini. Despite the high boot, referee Jarred Gillett opted to just give a yellow card and take no further action.

Was this a red card incident?

No doubt feeling bruised by the loss, Luiz revealed the further extent of his injury on Instagram, showing a nasty cut on the lip with a comment in Portuguese which translates to: “Everything okay here.”

TIF thoughts on Douglas Luiz and Aston Villa…

The fact that Lanzini didn’t get punished any harsher than a yellow card, and then West Ham went on to win the game, must have really (quite literally) added insult to injury for Luiz.

As is evidenced in the picture, his lip has clearly required some stitches, so it must have been a rather painful and nasty foul to suffer.

Speaking on the incident after the game (via Birmingham World) manager Steven Gerrard said it would require ‘expert help’ to sort before claiming that Luiz’s commitment to stay on the field despite his pain showed the ‘type of character’ he wants from all of his players.

Though he could at least find the funny side, joking: “There will be no kissing for him tonight.”
