Wolves journalist Tim Spiers has been discussing Ruben Neves and his future at the club following the January transfer window.

It was a relatively low-key transfer window for Bruno Lage’s men as they didn’t spend a lot of money, whilst there was one big-name exit in the form of Adama Traore to Barcelona, but even that was on loan until the end of the season.

However, there was the potential for another big-name exit in the form of Neves, as he found himself linked with moves to a few Premier League clubs. Reports from Spain claimed that Chelsea were looking to sign him, whilst TalkSport claimed that Manchester United were looking into the possibility of bringing him in.

Now he has stayed at the club, the talk surrounds whether or not he will sign a new deal at the club. Writing during a Q&A for The Athletic, Spiers discussed Neves’ future and claimed that it is set to be a big talking point at Molineux come the end of the season.

He said: “The future of Neves will again be a theme of the summer. There was an expectation throughout the club that he would leave last year, but a serious buyer never materialised.

“However, with his contract up in 2024, the last thing Wolves will want is another Adama Traore situation, so a new contract for Neves or a big-money sale, after five years at the club, could be on the cards.”

It certainly is going to be an interesting situation surrounding Neves when the summer comes around.

It’s clear that he is a wanted commodity given the interest that came his way this window, and at the age of 24, has still got some time to go in his career, so a move to a bigger club that is competing in Europe consistently certainly can’t be ruled out.

You just have to hope that if he does leave, Wolves are able to get a decent amount of money in order to reinvest it back into the squad.
