Richard Mennear has been speaking on The Roar Podcast about how Sunderland’s transfer business may not be done.

Sunderland excited a lot of fans this week when they managed to re-sign former striker Jermain Defoe, who netted 37 goals during his previous stint with the club, while the more under-the-radar signing of Jay Matete could be a good acquisition.

However, the Black Cats also saw five players leave during January and this means that their squad is still somewhat thin – especially in the defence, with just one recognised left-back and two recognised right-backs, which could see them dip into the free agency market.

Mennear believes that the Black Cats will be looking to sign some free agents.

He said: “I think they’re very short in defence so I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re active in the free-agent market just for some kind of cover there, because I think they’re very short if there’s an injury.”

This current PL centre-back almost signed for Sunderland back in 2015.

Sunderland managed to bring in six new signings in January, but with the majority of them arriving under former manager Lee Johnson, it remains to be seen whether or not those players will be wanted by the new boss.

With the Black Cats still very much in the mix for automatic promotion out of League One, they will be hoping that their business is good enough to challenge the likes of Wigan Atheltic and Rotherham United, and with the free-agent market still open, they may be able to find some more gems like Defoe who are still looking to get some minutes under their belt.
