Reliable football journalist Alasdair Gold has claimed there is strong interest coming from Newcastle United in Steve Hitchen as a possible director of football candidate.

The new ownership on Tyneside has brought a lot of change in just a short space of time, with a new manager in place as well as five new signings in the January transfer window.

And it seems the final missing piece of their puzzle lies in finding themselves a director of football, and Tottenham Hotspur correspondent Gold believes Hitchen is on their radar, as well as Everton’s.

Just last week, Hitchen resigned from his role at Spurs after his responsibilities were reduced following the appointment of Fabio Paratici in the summer.

The Toon went into the January window with Nick Hammond as their transfer consultant, but his appointment was only on a short-term basis – and speaking on his latest YouTube video, Gold had the following to say on their interest in Hitchen:

“He’s on gardening leave now, from what I understand, and there’s a lot of interest from, particularly Everton, but also Newcastle in taking him in to do a sporting director role there.”

TIF Thoughts on Steve Hitchen at NUFC…

We think this could be a very smart move from the Toon in their search to fill the vacancy on Tyneside given the experience Hitchen has built up during his time at Tottenham and Liverpool.

Hitchen was at the centre of a number of big deals which Spurs failed to get over the line due to the club being unwilling to provide him with the funds to seal signings.

Deals for players such as Bruno Fernandes spring to mind where the Lilywhites were in the advanced stages of negotiations, but were not willing to put up the required funds for the player.

However, if the Toon are able to stay in the Premier League this season, it is a possibility the owners look to invest heavily over the summer and we think Hitchen could be a useful part in the club’s setup.
