Newcastle United journalist Liam Kennedy has been discussing the possibility of the club signing Dean Henderson in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Newcastle United have certainly been splashing the cash in recent months, spending heavily in the January transfer window as they look to keep their place in the Premier League.

And if they do stay up, you would imagine that they’ll be doing the same again in the summer window as they look to build a side that is capable of matching the owner’s ambitious plans.

And Henderson could very well be one of the men to make that happen.

There were reports late in this past January window that claimed the England shot-stopper could have been on the way to St. James’ Park on loan until the end of the season, and speaking on NUFC Matters (46:40), when asked by host Steve Wraith whether a goalkeeper would be brought in this summer, Kennedy claimed that when the summer window comes around, that the club might look into the move again.

He also hinted that there was a good chance it could become a reality given that both parties apparently want the deal to happen:

“Do I think Newcastle need can upgrade in that department? Yes. And I suspect they probably will. I think the obvious one that most people are talking about and there is a very keen interest on both sides, player and Newcastle United is Dean Henderson.

“And I suspect that’ll be a move that’s probably revisited in the summer. We’re talking about an England international goalkeeper who’s probably going to be available between £20m- £30m. I think we’ll see that move probably come to fruition in the summer I would suspect”

Would you want Henderson at Newcastle United?

No

This is a move that could help Newcastle United in a few areas.

It would help Newcastle on the pitch, with Henderson’s numbers from back in 2019/20 when he was last a regular No 1 in terms of save percentage (75.2%) and goals against per 90 minutes (0.92) (via FBRef) being better than Dubravka’s (66.0% & 1.55) and Darlow’s (64.9% and 1.87) at (via FBRef).

But it’s fair to say that goalkeeper is a position that Newcastle are well stocked in at the moment, with as many as four currently on their books for 2022/23 in the form of Dubravka, Darlow, Freddie Woodman and Mark Gillespie, so if they were to move for Henderson, you would imagine that one, if not a few of them will have to be moved on.

So if they can sell off a couple of their other men, then they can use that money to help put towards other areas of the pitch that might need improving, so this is a move that could well have multiple benefits for Eddie Howe’s men.
