Newcastle United journalist Liam Kennedy has given his thoughts on the club possibly appointing Majed Al Sorour to the board.

The Toon have been going through a period of change that has covered matters both on and off the pitch in the past few months.

With the club having gone through a change of ownership, manager and chief executive, as well as numerous changes to the players on the pitch, Newcastle are certainly starting to take on a new shape and direction from where they were under the previous owner.

And according to a report from The Times, the club were set to make another appointment in the form of Al Sorour as one of the club’s directors.

However, speaking on the latest edition of NUFC Matters, Kennedy claimed he didn’t have anything concrete to confirm whether or not the deal was likely to be true, but that he wouldn’t be surprised if it did end up being the case.

He said: “I’d not heard anything new on this one. It wouldn’t surprise me if he was [appointed], but I don’t believe that’s something that has happened yet. Like I say, it could happen. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see more Saudi influence on the board, given the size of their majority shareholding.”

The report claims (via NUFCBlog) that his appointment would help drive the club when it comes to signing lucrative sponsorship deals that could help boost the club’s bank balance, and that the owners have huge plans to make Newcastle United ‘the focal point of a global sports and football portfolio’, with the PIF planning to follow the ‘multi-club’ approach taken by Manchester City over the past decade.

Not that the club need too much extra money at their disposal given their Financial Fair Play boundaries and the vast wealth that the club have already, but it all helps towards making the club bigger and more attractive to big-name players.

So you just have to hope that Newcastle are indeed able to appoint someone with Al Sorour’s sort of influence to the club, because it could well be another big milestone in the timeline of the club as they look to build their empire and achieve some of their lofty ambitions.
