Newcastle United widened the gap between themselves and the drop zone thanks to Kieran Trippier’s free-kick settling a nervy fixture at St James’ Park 1-0. However, it wasn’t all good news for the January recruit. He was forced off with an injury in the second half and has since gone for a scan.

Trippier made it two goals in two games with back-to-back free kicks, helping his new side to three consecutive Premier League wins at the most crucial time, leaving them now four points above the drop.

He took the armband for the game too, that just cements how important he’s been to the team, but he went for an x-ray with Eddie Howe nervous it could be a break.

Gary Neville on Sky Sports at the time was worried for Newcastle given the departure of Trippier: “This is the most compact I have seen Newcastle in years. But Trippier’s injury is a real problem for Newcastle.”

As things stand, the extent of the injury is unknown nor is a return date. Unfortunately for the Toon Army, Trippier returned to St James’ Park on crutches with a protective boot on.

A positive that can be taken though is that he was in and out quickly by the sounds of it, so hopefully for Newcastle fans it isn’t too serious and the boot and crutches are just precautionary.

His goal against Aston Villa has put survival back firmly in the hands of the Magpies, something that seemed a long way off not long ago, what a turnaround it has been.
