Newcastle United boosted their bid to beat the drop this season with a hard fought 1-0 win at home to Aston Villa thanks to another sumptuous Kieran Trippier free-kick.

The January recruit, who has scored from a dead ball situation in consecutive games, was forced off through injury in the second half. That’ll surely overshadow the result as someone who can be the match winner from right back is always going to be a huge miss.

Will Newcastle be relegated?

Although Trippier is likely to get plenty of headlines for being the match winner, it was another January recruit which stood out to Gary Neville on Sky Sports.

He actually singled out Dan Burn for added praise, going on to say: “Burn has been the best Newcastle player by a mile. All his work has been really good. He has shown great composure.”

As per SofaScore, Burn only lost the ball six times in the 90 minutes and only conceded one foul, showing how calm he was on the ball and how solid he was on what could be a momentous day for the Magpies.

They took a huge step towards survival after the win, they remain just the one position above the drop zone, but they have stretched their gap to four points, with a game in hand too.

Survival is fully in the hands of Eddie Howe’s men, something that seemed a long shot a month ago, what a turn around it has been in recent weeks!
