Phil Hay has been discussing why Leeds United turned down the opportunity to sign Donny van de Beek.

It was a hectic Deadline Day for a lot of clubs, however, Leeds were not one of them, with the only potential business that could’ve happened, according to Hay, was Crysencio Summerville departing on loan, followed by a subsequent replacement.

Who would be a better fit for Leeds?

While no Deadline Day signings arriving was just like the rest of their window, it’s not like players weren’t being presented to them, with new Everton signing Donny van de Beek having been offered to Leeds and Marcelo Bielsa.

Speaking on The Phil Hay Show, Hay gave his thoughts on why the Dutch midfielder was not fancied by the club or manager.

He said: “Van de Beek, again, was considered not to be the right fit, and I can’t explain what that exactly means, but I think you can surmise that it’s a lot of factors; it’s fitness; it’s perhaps his exact style; possibly ego; possibly the thought of, ‘will this guy play?’; ‘is he going to be in my starting lineup?’

“You have to factor in that [he’s] a very expensive player with quite a high profile – is he right to put into the dressing room? For one reason or another, they didn’t take that up.”

TIF Thoughts on Donny van de Beek…

While the Dutchman impressed during his time at Ajax by helping them reach the Champions League semi-finals, his move to the Premier League has not worked out, with just four starts domestically, which could have been a big red flag for Leeds when he was pushed their way.

Everton were the ones to take a plunge on Van de Beek, and while Leeds could have done with a central midfielder, they appeared to be content with either sticking with what they had or hoping RB Salzburg would change their stance on Brenden Aaronson, for whom Leeds Live has claimed they will certainly go back in for over the summer.
