Richard Mennear has been speaking on The Roar podcast about the potential blow Sunderland’s owners could deal in their managerial search.

There appear to be some mixed messages flying about at the minute when it comes to Sunderland’s next manager, with Luke Edwards claiming that Sunderland and Roy Keane have spoken about taking the vacant managerial role – though that does not mean he’s been interviewed.

Would Roy Keane get Sunderland promoted?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

Keane would create a lot of excitement at the Stadium of Light given he did well last time he was in the dugout, achieving promotion to the Premier League, but with someone such as Grant McCann having an actual interview, he may seemingly be closer to landing the job, which could disappoint a lot of fans.

Mennear believes that not appointing Keane as manager could be a big blow for Sunderland.

“There’s obviously a lot of excitement now around a potential Roy Keane appointment, if Roy Keane wasn’t to be the next Sunderland manager – whether he didn’t fancy it for whatever reason, or he wasn’t happy with the structures or whatever, then they had to go somewhere else – then that would be a bit of a blow, I think now, for the Sunderland fans.”

TIF Thoughts on Sunderland’s managerial search…

While Keane would absolutely be the right appointment to get fans excited and fully behind the team and potentially get sell-out crowds to every single home game, he may not be the best fit given the Black Cats surely can’t stomach a fifth straight season in League One, so aiming for McCann, who earned promotion from the same division last season would be a lot smarter.

It’s a fine balancing act that Sunderland’s owners have on their hands between handing fans what they want in Roy Keane or potentially going for someone who has experience managing in the modern game.
