Former Sunderland striker Djibril Cisse has taken to Instagram to cheekily stake his claim over a potential return to the Stadium of Light following their latest signing. 

On Monday, the Black Cats confirmed the return of Jermain Defoe to Wearside, with the free agent signing until the end of the 2021/22 campaign.

Cisse is currently playing his football out in America with PAO Chicago, almost 13 years on from his season-long loan spell with Sunderland.

And the Frenchman took to Sunderland’s Instagram post showing Defoe and the club’s owner, Kyril Louis-Dreyfus, where he commented: “I need 1 last dance too.”

39-year-old Defoe left his former side, Rangers, earlier in the month having failed to earn any consistent game time for the Scottish side over the course of the campaign.

And just under five years on from leaving the Black Cats for Bournemouth, Defoe joins up with Sunderland as they aim to secure promotion back to the Championship.

The last time Defoe played for Sunderland, the Wearside club had just been relegated from the Premier League in a season which saw the Englishman score 15 league goals (via Transfermarkt).

However, with League One top scorer Ross Stewart and Defoe at the disposal of the Black Cats, Cisse may find himself waiting a while for a phone call from Louis-Dreyfus with an offer…
