Sunderland owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus has dropped a potentially huge transfer hint on the possibility of Jermain Defoe making a return to Wearside today.

Reports have suggested the 39-year-old could sign for the Black Cats before the 11pm deadline to seal a sensational return to the League One side.

Would Defoe be a good signing?

The news comes just hours after the Wearside club parted ways with Lee Johnson after their humiliating 6-0 defeat to Bolton Wanderers at the weekend.

Defoe has been a free agent since leaving Scottish champions Rangers earlier in the month, with a host of clubs linked with potentially acquiring the former Premier League ace.

Having left the Black Cats back in 2017 for Bournemouth, it seems Louis-Dreyfus may have dropped an encouraging hint at his possible return on Instagram.

The Sunderland owner was spotted liking a Sky Sports post reporting on the future of Defoe, with a move to the Stadium of Light being discussed by the presenters.

Defoe netted 37 goals during his time on Wearside, where he made 93 appearances – but he struggled for game time at the Gers before leaving a couple of weeks ago.

As the Black Cats aim to finally make their return to the Championship, could the potential addition of Defoe help them in their fight for promotion?
