Fabrizio Romano has been speaking on the latest episode of the Here We Go podcast to discuss the latest in Newcastle United’s pursuit of Jesse Lingard.

The clock is ticking down on the transfer window, with the Toon still looking to bolster Eddie Howe’s options – with Jesse Lingard believed to be firmly on their radar.

Do you expect Lingard to join this month?

Lingard is currently away on a winter break in Dubai with the Premier League currently on a two-week break, however, it is believed the Manchester United ace could do a medical in Saudi Arabia, where the Newcastle squad are training.

The Englishman was able to work his way back into Gareth Southgate’s plans during his loan spell with West Ham United, but having dropped out of United’s plans, will a move in the summer leave it too late to earn himself a spot in the World Cup squad?

There are strong links to the Magpies aiming to add a new centre-back to their squad come the end of the window, too. However, Romano believes they’re pushing to sign Lingard on a short-term loan deal.

He said: “As we said, keep an eye on Newcastle until the end, because they’re pushing and pushing for Jesse Lingard; he is the player they want to sign.

“But it’s not going to be an easy negotiation with the player, because he wants to go only on loan until the end of the season. So Newcastle are going to push, but it’s not easy.”

TIF Thoughts on Lingard to NUFC…

From the player’s point of view, we feel a January move should be Lingard’s top priority, with just a matter of months remaining on his current deal with the Red Devils.

Lingard has already shown during his time at West Ham that he has the ability to hit the ground running in a new team, and if he could do so on Tyneside, surely it would increase his worth in the summer as a free agent.

Having barely played for United this season, a move to St. James’ Park would also allow Lingard to head into the summer with more regular match practice under his belt than he would’ve likely got at Old Trafford.

However, it could now be a case of just finding an agreement on a loan fee for the 29-year-old, with the player believed to be open to the idea of a loan deal.
