Leeds United fans have been reacting to comments made by Graeme Souness regarding Marcelo Bielsa’s side and the way they play.

It’s fair to say that Leeds’ style of play, whilst seen as entertaining, has certainly earned its detractors during the time the club have been in the Premier League – more often than not coming after big defeats like against Manchester City and Manchester United.

However, when it goes well for them, it can bring them plenty of plaudits along the way. That is what happened following their 3-2 win over West Ham United this past weekend, a result that saw them move nine points clear of the relegation zone.

It was certainly an exciting game throughout, with 33 shots in total – 10 of which were on target – as both sides combined for 46 tackles (via WhoScored), and speaking after the game on Sky Sports, Souness (as quoted by journalist James Marshment), was full of praise for the Whites’ style of play:

“They’re my favourite team to watch. City are great but these are a tremendous watch. They are honest to a man. If you know anything – or even a little about football – you want them in the PL.

“If I lived anywhere [in] Yorkshire, I’d buy a season ticket!”

These comments generated some interesting responses from Leeds fans when they flashed across their timeline, with some eager to point out how Souness hasn’t always been kind to their style of play at times this season:

“He was calling us a shambles not so long ago. Make your mind up Graham.”

“Hmmm he was slating the defending a while ago”
“Wow.”
“What a hypercritic. Only a month ago he was saying there’s no place for Bielsa’s football in ‘our’ premier league”
“Graeme Souness is the definition of hypocrite he’s been slating us all season.”
“He’s changed his tune. Last time I heard him on Sky with @jermainebecks83 he was slagging Bielsa off when we had our 23s out against Arsenal”
“He hasn’t watched us for rest of season has he? Credit where it’s due but today was the first Bielsa like team game we’ve played virtually all season. We deserved it today. We now need this every week.”

Will Leeds upgrade their squad this month?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

It’s a style of play not for the faint-hearted, but so long as Leeds United stay in the Premier League, then it’s served its purpose.
