Tottenham Hotspur: Fans slam Matt Doherty’s performance

Tottenham Hotspur fans have been reacting to the performance of Matt Doherty during their Carabao Cup tie.

In a pretty back-and-forth game that saw both sides have plenty of chances and share a pretty frantic few minutes during the first half, it was Tottenham who came out victorious and sealed their place in the semi-finals of the competition.

It means that Tottenham are one step closer to claiming some silverware as they hope to end the trophy drought that they’ve been on since the 2007/08 season. And even though they were able to progress, there were still some players who, at least according to the fans who were commenting online, didn’t seem to be pulling their weight.

How many points did Tottenham gain in the following seasons? First up: 2020/21

29-year-old Doherty didn’t make a single tackle against West Ham United, only won 50% of his aerial duels and didn’t complete a dribble successfully before being pulled off in the closing stages (via WhoScored), which led to some rather fierce criticism from the supporters on social media:

“Nah I’m actually concerned about Doherty. I’m pretty sure he’s not actually a footballer”

“Doherty got to be the first out the door ain’t he??”
“Doherty makes Emerson look like prime Roberto Carlos”
“Matt Doherty is the worst player I’ve seen in 15 years pathetic player”
“How is Doherty still on im so scared rn”
“Regulion and Doherty are a couple of bang average players. Noway this team can progress with quality like this.”
“Not a bad first half…although I’m sorry but Matt Doherty you’ve got to go just not good enough”
“Matt Doherty is so slow closing down! He’s giving them far too much space to run at him or get a cross in!”

Does Doherty need to be sold?

Recent reports have suggested that the club are willing to sell the Irishman in the upcoming January transfer window, and if he keeps performing like this, then that just makes the case to get rid of him all the easier.
