TalkSport pundit and former Tottenham Hotspur player Danny Murphy has given his thoughts on the performance of Harry Winks during their recent Premier League game.

Winks has very much been a fringe figure for Tottenham so far this season, both under Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte, compiling a total of nine appearances before this weekend’s game against Liverpool, six of which were starts.

However, he was trusted with the start against Jürgen Klopp’s men, and the 25-year-old put in a rather respectable performance, completing 79% of his passes – which was above the team average of 76% – made one tackle, one clearance and four interceptions for an overall rating of 7.09, fifth-highest of all Spurs players on the day (via WhoScored).

Speaking on TalkSport, Murphy praised Winks’ performance against Liverpool, claiming that there might have been a motivation for him to put in a performance like that, saying:

“I tell you what was really positive about Tottenham yesterday for me, and I’ve always been a fan of Harry Winks, I thought his positivity and his passing, his fitness levels, energy – he looked like he was trying to prove a point and I was really pleased for him.”

TIF Thoughts on Danny Murphy’s comments about Harry Winks at Tottenham Hotspur…

Murphy is right with his assessment of Winks having a point to prove. As his lack of appearances show, as well as reports hinting that he could be set for a move away in the January transfer window, his future at the club is very much in doubt.

And with Tottenham looking to take steps forward in the future with the appointment of a serial winner like Antonio Conte, Winks might not want to miss the boat if the club are able to become a success moving forward.

So it’s important that he does show himself to be of some use to the club, or he could find himself being moved out of the club in the not-too-distant future. Whether or not he’ll get those chances, though, we’ll just have to wait and see.
