Many Newcastle Untied fans have been getting giddy of late, with the January rumour mill in full flow for the richest club in the world.

However, that excitement was quashed a little bit when Alan Nixon revealed one of Eddie Howe’s potential targets.

Winning just one game this season, there needs to be improvements everywhere for the Toon, with defence seemingly an area at which Howe is looking closely. Nixon claims that if they are priced out on a move for Burnley’s James Tarkowski or Ben Mee, then the Magpies boss will turn his attentions to Steve Cook.

Can you name who scored the most league goals for Newcastle United in years gone by? Let's see if you can starting with 2020/21

Cook will have a great understanding of Howe and how he likes to play football and the system etc from their mutual time at the Vitality Stadium, but surely he isn’t the answer to fight off relegation to the Championship, the league where the 30-year-old currently plies his trade.

He has only appeared four times for Bournemouth this season, one of those coming in the Carabao Cup. Aside from two other games where he was an unused substitute, he has been absent from the Cherries’ squad for the rest of the season.

In those four games where he has featured, he’s conceded a whopping 11 goals! How can that help improve a Premier League team who are fighting for their lives?
