Newcastle United fans have had a rather disappointing season so far, as have the players on the pitch, with the Magpies a lowly 19th in the table as the midway point of the campaign approaches.

Amid the team’s relegation-battling struggles, Joe Willock has been getting a bit of a roasting on social media from some supporters following a recent interview with the club’s official website.

The 22-year-old mentioned that he was learning about himself every day, more so than last season when he was scoring frequently. He also had a message for his critics who ask why he isn’t scoring, claiming that his game isn’t all about goals and that he is improving in other areas as he said: “I’m learning more about myself now than when I was scoring every week.”

Should Newcastle sign Lingard?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

However, some members of the Toon Army didn’t like the comments, replying with disdain to what he had to say.

What these Newcastle fans said

“Ngl, I’d prefer the goals” @darrengrimes_

“That’s great Joe but we kind of need you to start scoring again….” @Doug__85

“Rather see him scoring every week to be fair.” @Howay_The_Lads

“He can’t pass a ball this season, focus on that before scoring lad.” @JosephBell98

“Course he would say that though.” @carll_ne

“We knew you wouldn’t be able to score at that level this season and that’s not a criticism. Last season you looked like you had something to prove but this season there’s something missing. Maybe desire or possibly a realisation that you made the wrong move. Show us more!” @AndyHarle1968

As some of these fans have pointed out, there has been a major drop-off for Willock in front of goal. Last season he was in mouth-watering form for the Magpies, bagging eight goals in just 14 Premier League appearances during his loan spell from Arsenal.

Newcastle's all-time top Premier League goalscorer is Alan Shearer but how many goals did he score for the club?

Unfortunately, he has found it much harder this season since his permanent move to Tyneside, playing 16 games in all competitions but still yet to register a goal or assist. That’s incredibly disappointing given how he performed in the 2020/21 campaign.

It’s unfair to just single him out though, as there are plenty of players not stepping up at Newcastle, as evidenced by their awful league position. Therefore, to pin a large portion of the blame on a young player like Willock is not the way to go.
