Newcastle United find themselves in a perilous position in the Premier League’s bottom three, so the January transfer window can’t come quick enough for them to hopefully add quality to the squad.

Despite all the links to the likes of Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial, a returning loanee is the latest news to emerge regarding the Toon Army’s transfer strategy in the first month of 2022.

It has been reported that Matty Longstaff’s loan contract with Aberdeen is set to be terminated by Newcastle, with the midfielder duly joining back up with the Magpies’ squad. It is expected that he will get a chance to impress Eddie Howe before they decide if he is to go out on loan again.

These Newcastle fans were happy with the update, taking to Twitter to voice their approval of the club’s reported plans for the 21-year-old in January.

How these Newcastle fans reacted

“I would like to see more of Sean also. He was great under Benitez. Bruce ruined him though but maybe can find good form with Howe! Matty is decent and might help us with goals.” @AccursedFMGames

“No surprise. Let’s hope Eddie Howe can get him back on track #NUFC.” @Wig82

“Hope Howe can install some confidence into the lad and get him playing in the team, combative midfielder we need but he needs to up his game.” @djlucasjunior

“Is this a sign that the owners are not going to spend crazy like some of us was expecting.” @zee1783

“He’s needed! He has so much potential and is miles better than his bro.” @peter2828

“Be like a new signing.” @SimonSmagoo

It’s safe to say that they aren’t against the idea of Longstaff getting a chance under Howe, anything to try and change the dismal run they’ve been on since the opening day of the season.

Starting with a relatively recent player. Who is this?

The 21-year-old has just 19 first team games under his belt in his career, but he did score twice for the Toon in the 2019/20 season, including a famous winner against Manchester United, showing that he can rise to the big occasion when given a chance.

While Longstaff potentially returning probably isn’t going to be the only remedy that Newcastle need in order to boost their top-flight survival chances, there’s no reason why he couldn’t yet play his part in a survival charge. After all, with Howe now at the helm, that could be the spark for the youngster to get his second wind at St James’ Park in the post-Steve Bruce era.
