Patrick van Straaten has been speaking on the Football Daily YouTube channel about Newcastle United’s decision to appoint Eddie Howe as their new manager.

The Magpies have experienced a turbulent time over the past couple of weeks since sacking Steve Bruce, as they’ve appointed Howe as their new manager but have had Graeme Jones on interim duty, while they were also rejected by Unai Emery in that period of time.

Will Howe succeed at Newcastle?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

Howe has only ever managed two clubs during his career in Bournemouth and Burnley, and although the latter did not last long due to family reasons, now he has a chance to prove he can do a good job at a team other than Bournemouth – and he will certainly have to show he can given Newcastle’s place in the league.

Van Straaten believes that the appointment of Howe is a very poor one, as he spoke on Football Daily before the news was confirmed.

“You hire anyone who keeps you up, like we’re not arguing for [Sam] Allardyce, we’re just saying that if Howe takes you down, that is such a calamity for them.

“It’s going to take another couple of years and a load more money to get them back up again and they’ll lose [Allan] Saint-Maximin, they’ll lose all the talent they have.”

TIF Thoughts on Howe’s appointment…

Howe does certainly arrive with Premier League experience and also spent a vast amount of time fighting relegation battles with the Cherries, so he should be able to pull on his past times with Bournemouth to help the Magpies pull away from the bottom – and most importantly, pick up their first win.

So while the stakes are high, there is every chance that Howe is exactly what Newcastle need in the short term, despite Van Straaten’s concerns.

The new manager now has a full international break to prepare his squad for the first match when Premier League football returns, which is against Brentford at St. James’ Park, so he will receive the full backing of 52,000 fans as he looks to get a different tune out of this crop of players, who have failed to deliver this season.
