Newcastle United journalist Sean McCormick has been discussing the idea that Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe could join the club this summer.

A recent report in The Chronicle has claimed that the 23-year-old defender is ‘understood to be keen on a mooted loan’ to St. James’ Park this summer, with Newcastle United reportedly keen on strengthening the centre of defence this summer.

The England U21 international has struggled to cement a regular place down in the first team at Old Trafford, with his only regular football coming during a loan spell at Aston Villa in 2018/19.

And whilst the club are yet to sign anyone this transfer window, speaking about the matter on Facebook Live for The Chronicle, McCormick felt that Tuanzebe could very well be the first player through the door at St James’ Park:

“Axel Tuanzebe’s one to watch. His camp, of course, and the player himself, are said to be delighted at the prospect of joining Newcastle United, so that’s one to watch in the next couple of weeks, so that could be a goer and that could be when Newcastle United do eventually make their transfer breakthrough.”

Newcastle PL appearances quiz! This man is the all-time top Premier League appearance maker for Newcastle, but how many did he make?

Given that Newcastle United had the fifth-worst defensive record in the Premier League last season, it’s obvious that they do need to sort out the backline. But whether or not someone like Tuanzebe, who has only made 10 starts in the Premier League in his career, is the right man to try and help solve that is a different issue.

Would this be a good signing for Newcastle to make?

It’s all well and good being part of a Manchester United team with much better players around you to help carry you, but to be thrown in at the deep end and potentially help fight off relegation is a different matter.

They might be better off trying to get someone who is more battle-tested when it comes to that situation rather than taking a risk on someone who is still pretty inexperienced at Premier League level.
